The changes to the MRCP(UK) Limited Attempts Policy, announced by RCP in November 2021, will come into effect from January 2024. According to the new policy, the maximum number of attempts candidates can take at each part of the MRCP journey ( MRCP Part 1/MRCP Part 2 Written/MRCP PACES) has changed. The new policy permits candidates a maximum of six attempts at each part of MRCP(UK). Candidates who reach six attempts will be allowed one exceptional additional attempt. Only one exceptional additional attempt will be permitted.
Candidates can apply for an exceptional seventh attempt at any part of the MRCP(UK) journey. Those requesting an additional attempt must demonstrate educational activity that will assist them in passing. It is advisable to discuss previous examination attempts with your educational supervisor or a senior colleague to identify areas for improvement. Prepare an educational plan to target these areas.
If you are looking to take an additional attempt, ensure to undertake relevant additional learning before applying for it. It is always better to have a discussion with your educational supervisor when you intend to retake the examination. Once you are clear about all this, complete the exceptional additional attempt form. Remember, MRCP(UK) will not accept requests for additional attempts based on exceptional circumstances. Candidates must declare themselves fit to sit for the exam.
Complete the Exceptional additional attempt form by filling in all the required details. Your educational supervisor and training program director (or equivalents) must confirm that you have demonstrated an improvement in your knowledge and skills. Their confirmation signature is proof that your pass result is highly likely at the next attempt. Then ,your educational supervisor must scan a copy of the form and email it to your College of Entry. Ensure that the form is emailed from your educational supervisor’s work email address.
Apart from that, make sure that the forms are submitted at least two weeks before the relevant application period opens. It usually takes five working days for the receipt of the form. Once the MRCP(UK) Regulatory Sub-Group accepts your application, you will be able to apply for an additional attempt at the examination.
