Key Benefits
The Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP) is a coveted, globally recognized postgraduate medical qualification that evaluates a doctor’s clinical skills, competence, and overall knowledge in internal medicine.
Conducted in 3 parts: Part 1, Part 2, and PACES, MRCP assesses both theoretical understanding and practical clinical ability. The exam is a key milestone for physicians aiming to advance their careers, gain international recognition, and pursue world-class training opportunities in the UK and across the globe.
MRCP Part 1:
Candidates are eligible to attempt MRCP examination, provided they hold a recognised primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) and have successfully completed 12 months of clinical internship or medical employment. Candidates are also advised to have proficiency in communicating in English.
MRCP Part 2:
Physicians in training who have passed the MRCP Part 1 examination can take the Part 2 exam. The examination is intended for doctors with clinical experience managing a broad range of medical conditions in real-world clinical practice.
MRCP PACES:
Candidates must have successfully passed MRCP Part 1, within the last 7 years before attempting PACES (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills). According to the Royal College of Physicians, candidates are strongly advised to apply for PACES after completing 2 years of practical experience and Part 2 of the MRCP examination.
Number of Attempts
There is no overall limit on the number of attempts for MRCP Part 1, Part 2 Written, or PACES. However, candidates must comply with current MRCP(UK) regulations and eligibility criteria.
MRCP Part 1:
This examination assesses the understanding and application of basic medical sciences and common clinical medicine relevant to postgraduate medical practice. The computer-based examination consists of 2 papers, each containing 100 best-of-five (BOF) multiple-choice questions. Each paper is conducted over 3 hours, and both papers contribute equally to the final score. The exam focuses on core medical knowledge, clinical reasoning, disease mechanisms, investigations, therapeutics, and evidence-based medicine expected from doctors in early postgraduate training.
MRCP Part 2:
This Part 2 exam evaluates the application of clinical knowledge, diagnostic reasoning, and patient management skills in complex clinical scenarios. The computer-based test consists of 2 papers, with 100 best-of-five (BOF) questions in each paper. Each paper has a duration of 3 hours. Candidates are expected to interpret clinical data, ECGs, imaging, laboratory investigations, and formulate appropriate diagnosis and management plans across a broad range of medical specialties. The examination emphasizes advanced clinical judgement, problem-solving ability, and evidence-based decision-making.
MRCP PACES:
In MRCP PACES, the candidates’ abilities pertaining to clinical knowledge, communication, and professional behaviour in real-life settings are closely monitored and evaluated. The examination is conducted in a structured clinical format consisting of 5 clinical stations, completed over approximately 2 hours. Candidates interact with real patients or trained surrogates while being assessed on physical examination skills, history-taking, communication, differential diagnosis, clinical management, and professionalism. PACES evaluates competency in managing acute, chronic, and complex medical conditions commonly encountered in day-to-day physician practice.
