Candidates who appeared for the MRCP Part 1 January 2026 exam have finally reached the moment they were waiting for after months of preparation and practice. For some candidates, this result may be a moment of relief and celebration, as they have successfully cleared an important stage of MRCP. At the same time, it may bring disappointment for some who were unable to pass the exam this time, especially those who tried very hard.

However, you should not let one result define your entire MRCP journey, which is built through multiple stages. Whether you have cleared the exam or need to attempt it again, the important thing now is to understand the next steps you should take. Here, we will give you the clarity you need to continue moving forward in the MRCP pathway.

If You Passed MRCP Part 1

First of all, congratulations if you are among the candidates who have cleared the exam. You have cleared a significant step which shows that you have built a strong foundation in medical sciences and core clinical knowledge. The next stage in the pathway is MRCP Part 2. The upcoming MRCP Part 2 exam is scheduled for July 2026, for which the booking window will be opened in May 2026.

Although this may seem some time away, we would recommend that candidates who have just passed Part 1 start their preparation now. Because the question style in Part 2 is quite different from that of the Part 1 exam.

MRCP Part 2 is an exam which focuses more on the application of clinical knowledge rather than simply testing theory knowledge. Candidates encounter questions that present clinical scenarios in which they must interpret findings, analyse investigations, and decide on appropriate management steps. Also, many questions include images and clinical data as well.

Because of this, starting preparation now, while the knowledge from Part 1 is still fresh, is something many MRCP experts recommend as helpful when aiming to clear Part 2 in a single attempt.

If You Didn’t Pass MRCP Part 1

For candidates who did not get the result they expected, the first reaction may naturally be disappointment. But it is important to remember that many doctors who eventually complete the MRCP pathway did not pass the exam on their first attempt. A result like this often becomes an opportunity to reflect on the preparation process and identify areas which could be improved.

You may already have an idea of what might have affected your performance. Whether it was lack of time for revision, insufficient question practice, or certain topics which required more focused study, you should think about it.

The good news is that the next opportunity is not far away. The next MRCP Part 1 exam is scheduled for May 2026, for which the booking window is currently open. The booking window, which was opened on 10th March 2026, will close on 17th March 2026. This gives candidates who wish to attempt again a chance to plan their preparation without a long gap.

During this period, it can be helpful to revisit the topics which felt challenging, practise more exam-style questions, and follow a structured study plan which allows enough time for revision.

So, that’s all about the smart steps that candidates can take after the MRCP Part 1 January 2026 results. The most important thing is to keep moving forward, regardless of the results. You must stay focused on your goal, prepare with proven strategies, and take the next step the smart way.
