MRCP Exam Structure
Your MRCP(UK) journey includes 3 parts, MRCP Part 1, MRCP Part 2 Written, and MRCP Part 2 PACES.
MRCP Part 1
The MRCP Part 1 is the first of three MRCP examinations conducted by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians. The exam tests the knowledge and foundation of aspirants in the clinical sciences relevant to medical practice and ensures you are equipped with specialist training.
MRCP Part 1 Exam: Key Points at a Glance
- Number of papers: Two papers
- Exam pattern: MCQ pattern with questions in best of five’ format.
- Number of questions: 200 MCQs
- Marking pattern: One mark for correct answer, No negative marking.
- Exam duration: 6 hours
MRCP Part 2 Written
The MRCP Part 2 Written is the second hurdle in the journey of achieving membership from RCP. This exam evaluates aspirants’ ability to interpret information and solve clinical problems, and it also assesses your core knowledge and comprehension.
MRCP Part 2 Exam at a Glance
- Number of Papers: Two papers
- Mode of Exam: Computer-based theory exam
- Exam Pattern: MCQ format with questions in the best of five format
- Number of Questions: 100 MCQs per paper
- Marking Pattern: One mark for each correct answer & no negative marking
- Time Duration: 3 hours per paper
MRCP PACES
MRCP PACES is the most challenging part among the three levels of getting Membership from the Royal College of Physicians. This Objective Structured Clinical Exam tests the skills of aspirants to reach the level where they can enter higher specialist training (ST3).
- Exam format: Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills
- Number of stations: 5
- Time duration: 20 minutes per station
Eligibility Requirements
To sit for the MRCP Part 1 exam, you need to meet the following eligibility requirements:
- The candidates must complete their primary medical qualification.
- Your medical degree must be from a recognized medical university or institution.
- The aspirant must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- If the aspirant is an international candidate, their medical degree should be recognized by the appropriate regulatory body in their home country.
For MRCP Part 2 Written and MRCP PACES, you need to tick off the following eligibility requirements
- You need to take MRCP Part 2 Written or PACES within seven years of passing Part 1.
- If you are not cleared within 7 years, you need to appear for Part 1 again.
