MRCP Part 1 is the first level in the assessment process that confers doctors with membership in the prestigious Royal college of Physicians. This examination evaluates the basic knowledge of candidates in medical science and their clinical understanding relevant for medical practice.

MRCP Part 1 Exam serves as an entry level gateway to MRCP certification and is therefore considered as an important step in the process.  For doctors who intend to advance their careers and establish themselves as globally certified physicians, passing MRCP Part 1 cannot be a game of chance.  A key factor in excelling in the exam is the thorough understanding of the MRCP Part 1 syllabus and following a study plan that aligns with it.

MRCP Part 1 Exam Pattern

MRCP Part 1 Exam is conducted in two sessions of three hours each and consists of two papers. The examination is computer- based and comprises of 100 multiple choice questions each. The questions follow the ‘best of five’ format in which there would be one correct answer and four distracters that serve as alternatives to the correct option. The candidates are required to choose the correct answer from the group. This format aims to assess the interpretation skills and problem-solving abilities of the candidates, apart from their core subject knowledge. There is no negative marking in both the papers.

  • Format: Two papers
  • Number of Questions: 100 multiple-choice questions per paper
  • Type of Questions: Best-of-Five (BoF) format
  • Total Duration: Six hours (3 hours for each paper)

Understanding the MRCP Part 1 Syllabus

MRCP part 1 asseses the candidate’s knowledge in different subjects of internal medicine and their ability to apply their knowledge. Being a fundamental paper, MRCP Part 1 encompasses a vast syllabus, covering various subjects including cardiology, respiratory medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, nephrology, haematology, infectious diseases, rheumatology, ophthalmology, geriatric medicine, oncology, and psychiatry. Questions are also asked from topics that fall under clinical sciences including clinical anatomy, clinical physiology, genetics, immunology, evidence-based medicine, etc.

Weightage for various Topics

In the MRCP Part 1 exam, not every topic has the same weightage in terms of the number of questions asked and marks allotted.  An effective strategy to crack the examination should include the proper assessment of the MRCP Part1 syllabus and accurate understanding of the most recurring topics in both the papers.
