The Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) is the gateway for physicians who wish to build a medical career in the UK. MRCP Part 1 Vs MRCP Part 2 – What are the key differences?

MRCP Part 1

The MRCP Part 1 exam is the entry-level examination for achieving the coveted membership in the Royal College of Physicians. This one-day examination primarily tests the knowledge and foundation of the aspirants. In MRCP Part 1, primary emphasis is to basic medical sciences and basic clinical sciences.

The exam includes two papers, each paper is of a two-hour duration. Each paper contains 100 multiple- choice questions in the best of five format. Aspirants gets one mark for each correct answer. There is no negative marking.
Once you have succeeded in Part 1, then you can have the joy of progressing to Part 2.

MRCP Part 2

The MRCP Part 2 contains written and PACES papers. MRCP Part 2 written exam consists of 2 papers. Each paper is of 3-hours duration and contains 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The candidates can take both papers on the same day.

MRCP PACES is an objective structured clinical examination. This exam usually conducts in a clinical setting like a hospital or clinical skills center. The examination includes five stations and eight patient encounters, which will assess the seven core skills needed for higher specialty training. This clinical exam tests the knowledge and skills of the aspirants and ensures whether the candidate possesses skills and knowledge as specified in the UK Specialty Training Curriculum for Core Medical Training / Curriculum for Internal
Medicine.
